About Eastern Lake Ontario Marshes Wildlife Management Area

The Eastern Lake Ontario Marshes Wildlife Management Area (WMA) is an expansive protected wetland complex stretching along the southeastern shoreline of Lake Ontario in Jefferson and Oswego counties, New York. Comprising over 6,000 acres, this area includes a mix of freshwater marshes, emergent wetland zones, shrub swamps, open water, and upland forested habitats. The marshes serve as critical breeding, staging, and stopover sites for waterfowl, migratory birds, and a wide variety of fish and amphibians. The Eastern Lake Ontario Marshes are particularly known for supporting significant populations of ducks, geese, and other waterbirds making it a popular destination for birdwatching and waterfowl hunting.

The WMA is managed by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) with primary goals to conserve habitats, maintain biodiversity, and allow public access for compatible recreational activities. Visitors can explore designated wildlife viewing areas, walking trails, and several boat launches that provide access for kayaking and fishing in the protected waters. Hunting seasons for waterfowl are well regulated, balancing recreation with wildlife sustainability. While there are no developed campgrounds inside the WMA, nearby state parks and forests offer camping options. The eastern region of Lake Ontario is recognized for its cold winters with lake effect snow, and warm, humid summers, making spring migration and fall hunting seasons particularly popular times to visit. Overall, the Eastern Lake Ontario Marshes WMA showcases the unique wetland ecosystems of the Great Lakes region while promoting outdoor enjoyment and wildlife conservation.
